A Few More Moments...And A Fire

I'll be writing about our little get away to Siena soon, but also had some photos I just wanted to share from last week.
I've been a bit lazy about posting, I guess. The day to day is often uneventful. Just walks, a bite of lunch, reading at nap-time. Not very 'share-worthy'!
This being said, I always have my little white camera with me, so the photos do stack up...

Morning walk that includes this favorite driveway.
I never get tired of shooting this view.

A very gorgeous kitty who took to the shade
while we were having a glass of wine by the lake.

Lake side wine stop...with books.
A favorite past time here.

In the spring when we are here, there are lots of flowers available to make pretty 'pots of color' that we can enjoy for the weeks we are here.
Now, it's a very limited selection that I have to work with...but I still managed to plant up a few pots for the terrace and pergola area. I'm happy with these, and the giant orange fluffy bees love the little purple daisies, too!

Nice texture combo...

While heading out for our morning walk the other day, we saw this huge plume of rather scary black smoke...what the??!?!!

Being the life long pyromaniac that I am, I insisted we go check it out.
I'm glad it wasn't someone's home, just a Big Rig being burned to the ground...
  What the??!!!???!

While we watched, a tire blew up and scared the hell out of us,
so we got going pretty quickly. There were loads of people watching.

Back to our morning walk, after the drama of the Big Rig fire....
We love our long walks through the fields below The Nut.

Cauliflower, I think...and lots of it.

Hmmm...which way now?

More to come, as the weather cools down and we really feel like autumn has arrived...

On Arrival....

After spending a night in Rome and having the best pizza ever (see previous post), we hopped a train to the station near us in Umbria, picked up our rental car, and drove the twenty minutes to our beloved "Nut". Our home away from home...

We were greeted by our two furry pals, Nemo and Tiger Lily.
They watched as Johnny brought our bag up.
  These stairs do get easier.

Silly kitties.

  Below:
The view we dream about when we are not actually sitting here on our terrace enjoying it.
It's perfect for coffee at sunrise, lunch in the afternoon, wine at aperitivo time, and especially late at night when there is lightening way across the valley, like last night. Bats, too.

I love to watch the train crawl through at night, too...like a caterpillar all lit up.

After unpacking and doing some freshening up, we went to visit a very wonderful pal who had planned a little 'do' in her garden to celebrate Johnny and Gudi's birthdays yesterday.
Lots of proseco, wonderful food, amazing cake. Fun was had by all, and we stayed way past our bedtime.
  It was perfect.

Watching the sunset from one of our favorite spots.

Still jet lagged, we woke up this morning at 4am. All good.
Got to watch the sun come up, and later took this early morning shot from the front door...

We are blown away by all the growth on the trees and bushes.
The olive trees are massive!

We popped down to a seasonally open fruit and veg farm stand that we normally don't get to enjoy in early spring. Picked up these goodies, below:

Looking forward to using the garlic, especially.

Lunch fixings include the local tomatoes from the farm stand, arugula, focaccia and a fabulous baked ricotta we brought up from Rome. Oh my god, it's so good. Worth carrying with ice on the train!

I think this will add up to a pretty good sandwich.

Lunch is ready!

Our usual 'lunch with a view' that we so look forward to.

  So what's next?
Well, after that lunch, it was nap time.
It's a couple of hours later, and I think we'll go check out the local nursery to see what plants are around this time of year.
And later...first night of the Panicale Wine Festival. Hmmm.....?

Will Work For Food

When Friday came around, it was so nice to wake up to sunshine. We had already made a 'maybe' plan with a pal to come by late in the morning for a bit of garden work, with lunch afterwards for our trouble.
I'm always happy to do anything to spend some time in this gorgeous garden, and lunch is always an occasion here. We just needed the day to be a dry one for the weeding, etc. we were going to be doing.

A perfect place to spend an afternoon working....
....and playing!

Johnny was ready to work, too, but his choice of labor was painting.

At work in the olive grove.

He would stop every half hour or so to help take all the debris we were creating down to the compost pile. Bless his heart. It was much appreciated, as the wheelbarrow was hard to handle on the slippery slopes.
  Then, back to work, dude!

A larger work, oil on canvas.
Johnny says this one will go through many changes.
This is just the first 'lay-in' of paint.

Once we finished dealing with weeds and cultivating under several rose bushes (btw, my arms look like hell, from thorns! Always...), lunch was prepared, and we were even able to enjoy our meal 'al fresco'.
  A total treat!
Pasta with pesto is a favorite here.

We munched to the sound of birds and an occasional frog croaking.
Perfection.

Next, another specialty of the house, 'carciafi alla romana', which are artichokes that have been cleaned and had the outer leaves removed, then cooked choke side down for a long time in water with a good amount of olive oil, lots of garlic, salt, and herbs of choice. Parsley on this day.
Mentucchia, a wild herb, is often used. It has a flavor between oregano and mint. Usually you sort of stuff the garlic and herbs into the leaves before dunking them face down into the liquid.
The secret is the slow braising until the hearts are soft. But not too soft. You want a little firmness still there. Prick with a fork to test doneness.
The water cooks off, and you are left with this super tasty liquid 'gold', which is drizzled over the chokes when served.

Don't forget to add the cleaned stems, too!
Looks good, right?

You can eat pretty much the whole thing, just watch out for the smallest part of the 'choke' on the very inside. These carciofi are cooked whole, nothing is removed except the toughest outer leaves. Very different from how we eat them at home, which is basically using the leaves as spoons to eat mayonnaise.
These are velvety soft and the taste is artichoke, garlic sweetness, and nutty, and herb-y. Mmm-mmm-mmm.

Yeah, I'll gorge on these any old day of the week.
The carciofi are in the markets now, and you buy six or eight or ten at a time.

It must be springtime.

Our dolce, or dessert, was simple cheese and pears.
A combination that is so right at this moment of the year. We enjoyed two cheeses, both pecorino.   We brought the one that had been aged in ash, the grey skinned chunk. The other was also aged. They were different and wonderful. Two types of pears made it even better.
We just nibbled away, enjoying the last of the wine and chatting about nothing in particular.
We will look forward to more of this.

When we got back to The Nut, shocked to see that we had been gone for five hours (!), Johnny went upstairs to putter in the studio, and I couldn't resist sitting in the sun in our lovely garden, where I was soon joined by Nemo, the terror of the land.

I love this skyline.

Nemo! You can stay, just don't 'knead' me with your claws out!!!

Yes, you are the King.
But you are also a 'royal' pain!
I still like you.

As I write this, on Sunday morning, we are looking at a few days of bad weather. It's raining now, and the temperatures are supposed to drop dramatically for a day or two. There's talk of snow, but I won't believe it until I see it...and if I do, I'll be taking pictures!

I think today is a perfect day to make pasta from scratch. With a slow cooked red sauce. And a fire going.
  And a good book.

A Day Or Two

We are getting out and about while the weather is nice. Looks like rain may be on the way in a few days. Hey, we'll take it. It's just so nice to be here.

Over the weekend, between bouts of Johnny painting here and there, we took our walks in the morning, as always, after coffee in bed.
(An aside-I think we may be the only visitors who rarely have coffee at the bar. We wake up super early, like at home, and have our coffee in bed while we read, or check emails...it's our ritual. People are shocked if they see us at the bar in the morning.
That being said, they would be even more shocked if they didn't see us there with wine in the evening)

We always try to get out early for our walk.

A walk up to the old church.

Especially pretty in the early morning sunshine.

Taking the road out of town to buy some art supplies, we pass one of my very favorite views.
This year, the scene is even prettier with the white blooming shrubs.

The weather has been fantastic. Great for photos.

I came across this lovely villa on a walk while Mr. J painted. Could not get closer, unfortunately, but still intrigued.

I have bought two pairs of boots this year, and I wore these for the first time over the weekend. Like slippers, only squishier. Light as a feather, too.

I just want to beam this entire scene to my California garden.

Sunday, we enjoyed a birthday party with friends in the morning, Johnny painted for awhile, then we headed to the lake in the late afternoon.

There is so much to love about spending an hour or two at the lake. Sundays, everyone comes out to play. All the generations show up. And they all talk to one another, play cards, walk along arm in arm, laugh...
  Sigh.

From one side of the lake....

...to the other side of the lake. We are equal opportunity lovers of this beautiful lake.

Here is a little sight and sound video of a typical weekend afternoon, lakeside-
  Enjoy.

Scenes From Today

Self-explanatory....Scenes from a typical day in our 'Other Life', here in Umbria.
We start with an early morning walk, go to the garden center to start the little 'step-garden' at the apartment, then out to paint in the afternoon, with a gentle evening walk for fun.
Oh, and then the Alien Cloud Sunset.
   Hey, it's Umbria....

A particular fruit tree I like to watch change.

Interesting details.

Nice light.

Kitty wants out.

A favorite ruin.

Wild violets and a lovely stone.

A closer look...

Starting to lay out a plan for my 'garden'.

The Golden Hour.

Painting at prime time.

Nice.

A beauty.

A favorite scene of Johnny's.

Alien clouds? Over Lago Trasimeno?

Sure, why not.
