Happy Halloween From Umbria

The morning fog this week has made for some especially creepy spiderweb viewing.
Without the moisture in the air, we wouldn't know these were here....and now that we know, we may never walk in the fields again!

These are right here at The Nut.
OOOOOooooooooooo!

Even the rosemary plants are covered.

The weeds are covered!
When the sun comes out, you don't see them...
Eeeeewwwww!

In the fields below the house, the fields are filled...FILLED...with webs. I honestly thought these were puffy flowers the first morning I saw them, but nooooooo.

Yep. Spiderwebs.

Ka-Reeeeepy.

Up close and personal.
I couldn't see any spiders, though.

You soon realize there is no escape.

Thankfully, I'm not that scared of spiders. I find the webs to be beautiful and kind of mesmerizing...

I did check my ankles several times, I must say.

Have a very scary Halloween, everybody!

Cool.

Sunday Afternoon Walk, Sunday Dinner

Today was a good day. I woke up feeling happy and clear, and ready for a simple Sunday with no drama.
All I wanted was a few hours in the garden here in Umbria, a nice walk in the countryside and a nice evening at home, then early to bed...The 'early to bed' part will happen as soon as I post this.

I spent a couple of hours weeding and trimming back a big iris bed. It was very satisfying, and getting my hands in the soil was very good for my soul. Then we went out to walk.

We wanted to walk somewhere easy, no big hills or heavy duty anything. We picked an area nearby that we'd walked in before, but we went a different way today. Lots of beautiful olive trees and nice views. It was cool out, with some sun and some clouds.
  Perfect...

Heavenly.

Amazing light, and all sorts of 'green'...!

I love the silvery grey olives with all the fall colors...

This time of year you can find loads of wild clematis in the woods.
They have a nice sweet scent!

The path got a little dicey, but only for a short time.

Lovely wood ferns here...

A wonderful path in the woods.

Yes, please.

Just more gorgeousness.

Back to civilization. And just in time.

After our walk, we popped by a favorite watering hole to play some foosball. I won, as always...poor Johnny. He puts up with my competitive nature. My goal is a 'shut-out'. So far, not yet...but I keep trying.
After kicking his ass yet again, we went home and I made it up to him by cooking a great Sunday dinner. It started with wine on the terrace and the best ever fried sage leaves...

OMG.

Need I say more?

I grilled up some eggplant to have with left over pasta from a couple of nights ago...

I had blanched some green beans earlier, and had just enough left over pasta with pesto...a match made in heaven...

I heated up some olive oil and fresh garlic, threw in the green beans...

... added the leftover pasta...

Sunday Dinner!

It was a really good day.
  Thanks, Umbria. I needed this.

Olive Harvesting With Friends

October is the month when everyone around this area of Umbria starts up their olive harvest. We've been told that November 25th was the start day 'way back when', but with the climate change and all, it begins much earlier these days.

Seems like just about everyone has olive trees, so there is lots of work to do. We enjoy helping out, bodies willing, and this year we put in two days on our landlord's property, and two days at a friend's property.
It's hard work, but we try to make it fun, and there is good socializing and a nice lunch, to boot. You start early, and put in a full day...

Early morning light in our friend's olive grove.

The big job is laying out the nets, which will catch all the olives as they fall to the ground. This takes several people, as the nets are huge, heavy, and a little hard to manipulate. This grove is really well maintained, so that makes it an easier job.

Laying down nets.

Once the nets are down, one person manages the 'shaker machine', which has long, stiff fingers that shake the olives out from the tallest branches. The rest of us use our hands, or a small hand held plastic rake called a 'rastrello'. This is fun work, really. It's so satisfying watching the olives collect in the nets.

They are so pretty.

At mid-morning, we break for coffee, than we break at mid-day for lunch...

There were some hot dishes, too. A nice way to sit, rest and get ready for the afternoon work.

The next day, we started early again. I love that morning light!

Same friend's grove, different area.

Back at it for day two.

When there is a hillside, the nets have to be stretched and pulled up high to catch the olives before they roll down into the canyon. We use our bodies and arms stretched way up, to catch them as best we can, or tall stakes and bamboo sticks, too.
It's a lot of work setting the nets just right.

You can just make out the rastrello (hand rake) in our friend's back pocket...

It's all about this!

Another break for lunch, and back to work we go....

Yum! Plus leftovers from the day before...
Nice to sit with pals and enjoy the beauty.

Johnny, please don't fall out of the tree.

A couple of kooks just doing their job.
Getting that last olive is very important!

Later in the afternoon, at quitting time, I loved seeing the grove all clean and tidy.
They still have more to pick, with some new friends in town, but our job here was done. We'll enjoy hearing how it all went, and how much was collected in all.

Nice.

There's More Than One Artist In This Family...

Don't ever underestimate the creative mind of a hungry gal waiting for her meal.
Give me just the basics to work with, and I can entertain myself for hours.

  Case in point:

1) A piece of plastic from a water bottle cap
2) A couple of grains of black pepper
3) A bread crumb

4) Add a piece of dry stick.

5) Add some grass.

(Lunch was great. We had three courses and dessert. Plenty of time in-between courses to have a bit of fun.)

6) Add a toothpick.

7) Add a scrap of paper from the toothpick.

8) Dip toothpick in chocolate from your dessert and use it like paint to make eye balls.

9) Take time to realize your husband is having second thoughts about ever taking you out in public again.

10) Create a worried look.

11) Keep having a great time with this...because you are really enjoying yourself despite your husband's regrets.

12) Remember your child within, and honor the hell out of her.

13) Don't forget that it's ok to be a weirdo.
