My last post was about spending an entire day walking around our local "Big City", Perugia. We had a great time wandering areas we'd never seen, as well as the usual high traffic areas...but one real standout was finding the Church of St. Michael the Archangel.
This round church, perched at the top of a hill, was a treasure. We just happened to look up this way, and there it was, at the top of a long walkway.
It could not have been more beautiful...especially on a sunny day. |
Upon entering, our breath was taken away by the beauty of the building itself.
The light coming in was pure magic. |
As always, we couldn't help wondering how they made it, way back when...but they did.
As we started in, we noticed a golden glow coming from a side room on the right...
I assume this is the baptismal area. The natural light was beyond the beyond... |
We just took our time, and walked all around the walls, noticing everything...
St. Michele in all his glory. |
There were several paintings as well as frescoes along the walls.
Johnny having a moment... |
I like to find the "Stations of the Cross" when we visit Catholic churches here. They are always different.
Here, they were the simplest I've ever seen. Just the numbers on a cross. Perfection.
As we walked around, it was lovely to see that golden light from the baptismal room on the opposite side of the space.
We just happened to be there at the most perfect time of day to witness this. |
Another nice fresco... |
Near the entry, we spotted these old church bells.
I wonder how old these are, and what the story is... |
We headed out to an incredible blue sky with puffy white clouds...
It was just right.
I highly recommend that you visit this church when you find yourself in Perugia. I'm sure it's well known, just not to us...until now.
